What is Hoopla?

Hoopla is a free resource offered by different libraries. Libraries pay to have a certain number of checkouts available to each patron specifically on Hoopla. Any author can request to have their books uploaded on hoopla, making it free for library users to read. This also includes free movies and tv shows!

Why Hoopla?

Major points on why I choose to use hoopla:

Cartoon caterpillar reading on a white library card with the text Library Card and a barcode on a dark background.

  1. It’s Free!! I don’t have to pay for a single thing, you just request a card from your library and there you go hundreds of books, movies tv shows right in my phone, kindle or tablet.

  1. All synced up! I don’t have to worry about moving from one device to another and loosing my place. I can also trade between library cards and still have my books with me.

  1. Downloads! I love that each item I borrow it instantly downloads. This means I don't have to worry about needing any internet acces after that. I can read on the train or plane or while camping, making vacation time a lot more relaxing.

Hand holding a Kindle inside an orange tent, reading by a mountain campsite with tents and blue sky outside.

  1. Indie authors! Unlike some other sites, this allows indie authors to upload their books and sell in other them in diffrent places. This also means, as an avid reader, I get access to authors I will have never gotten the chance to read since I couldn't afford it before. It also allows others to read and review allowing people to notice our favorite authors, helping them grow.

Dark library app home screen with ebook covers and tabs; titles include West of Port, The Hockey Problem, and So That Happened.

  1. Easy search! As some one who enjoys reading close door/clean books, I usually have to do a ton of research on the content of a book, while scrolling past hundreds of books that have covers I do not want to see. This would usually taking about an 30 minutes to find one book I want to read. Its maddening!! But Hoopla makes my searching so much easier. It allows me to filter the books, and search for ones all in the same category.

Hoopla: Finding the close door books :

This definitely is my favorite part of Hoopla! Like mentioned in the above paragraph searching can be done in categories. I use the search term “clean and wholesome”. This narrows the search down into books/ audiobooks that don’t go past the doors. It’s rare if every have to do any extra search on my part. This removes any books with covers that I may not want to see.

Ebook category page titled Clean & Wholesome showing romance book covers, including Seeking Persephone and Beach Haven.

A personal preference of mine is I like to see what is added in each week or month. There is a filter for that exactly . And instead of searching through hundreds of books I can go little by little.

If you prefer searching for a specific book or author or come across a book you are interested in, you can scroll down to the end of the description and it have a little box with different categories you would find the book in. If you see the category “clean and wholesome you know it won’t go past the door.
